How Drake’s "Iceman" Installation Reimagines a 1967 Masterpiece

"Fluids" cover reimagined with a fusion Allan Kaprow and Drake's faces

When hip-hop intersects with fine art, we gotta talk about it. If you’ve been watching The Boy Drake's, latest album rollout, you’ve probably seen the massive, 25-foot "Iceman" structure built entirely out of ice blocks for his upcoming album rollout; dropped in the heart of downtown Toronto.

Drake teases the enclosed release date for his highly anticipated "Iceman," album causing local streamers and citizens to quickly gather around the frozen blocks; making the moment an instant viral sensation and putting worldwide Drake fans and haters in an uproar of excitement and anticipation. But this isn’t just your average promo run, it’s a masterclass in art history and cultural curation.

Drake’s towering ice block installation is a direct nod to “Fluids,” a legendary 1967 Happening by conceptual artist Allan Kaprow. Kaprow’s original vision involved gathering a team of volunteers and building huge enclosures out of stacked ice blocks across various public locations in Pasadena and Los Angeles, California just to step back and watch them melt. It was a bold statement that was all about the views, the grind of physical labor, and the reality that nothing lasts forever.

Fast forward to today, and Drizzy is bringing that same avant-garde energy straight to the culture and the streets of Toronto. Seeing one of the biggest artists in the world taking a page out of a ’60s fine art exhibition to build hype for a modern hip-hop record is a heavy play. It elevates the standard, proving that the album rollout itself can be just as much of a conceptual masterpiece as the music. Fan or foe, the streets are talking and buzzing with hype for the upcoming May 15 release of "Iceman" Drake's ninth studio album.
